Background
After my residency in thoracic surgery at Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome (IRCCS Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli), I spent a couple of years as Chef de Clinique - Assistant in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Cochin Hospital - Paris Center Hospitals, Paris Descartes University - Paris, France. I carried out my care activity in surgical ward, operating room, outpatient and surgical availability for emergencies. I was involved in thoracic surgical procedures (surgery of lungs, chest wall, pleura, trachea, thyroid, thymus, mediastinum and esophagus), both elective and emergency, as operator and first assistant. I gained experience in surgery for locally advanced diseases, such as sleeve bronchial/carinal resections, resection and reconstruction of the chest wall and sternum (Pancoast tumors and sarcomas), pleurectomy/decortication for mesothelioma, resection and reconstruction of superior vena cava, excision of tumors infiltrating right atrium and diaphragm, HITHOC for mesothelioma and thymoma.
From April 1st 2021, I am a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon in the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Critical Area and Surgical, Medical and Molecular Pathology at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy (directed by Prof. M. Lucchi), where I also work as Tutor for the residents in thoracic surgery.
My main area of expertise is minimally-invasive surgery by VATS (uniportal, biportal and complete VATS) for the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and I also have experience as first assistant in robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (Intuitive DaVinci Xi).
My expertise also includes laryngo-tracheal pathologies of surgical interest and surgery for locally advanced diseases, such as sleeve bronchial/carinal resections, resection and reconstruction of the chest wall and sternum (Pancoast tumors and sarcomas), pleurectomy/decortication for mesothelioma, NSCLC surgery after chemotherapy/immunotherapy, HITHOC for mesothelioma and thymoma; salvage surgery for NSCLC.
My team is one of the leader groups in the field of Hyperthermic Intrathoracic Chemotherapy (HITHOC) and thymic pathologies worldwide.
Research
My team is one of the leader groups in the field of Hyperthermic Intrathoracic Chemotherapy (HITHOC) and thymic pathologies worldwide.
My active research fields include all thoracic oncology, collaborating with different experienced teams to investigate on translational and personalized medicine.
My research involves an innovative treatment in the field of intrathoracic chemotherapy for pleural carcinomatosis, being the first in Italy to perform the novel technique of Pressurized Intra-Thoracic Aerosol Chemotherapy (PITAC), with very promising oncological results.
